Contract Award: College Lake Earth Explorers Project
FWDP is delighted to be working on a very special project that combines agricultural history with exceptional wildlife and amazing fossils. We have just started work with the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust on their Earth Explorers Project at College Lake, a former chalk quarry and before that a thriving farm, at the foot of the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire. The Wildlife Trust has managed the site since the quarrying stopped in the 1980s, and nature has returned in abundance to this combination of wetland, meadow, woodland and traditional cornfield habitats.
A new eco-built visitor centre attracts thousands of visitors each year. Schoolchildren from across the county enjoy exploring the reserve to discover wildlife and learn about the geology too. College Lake is a Geological Site of Special Scientific Interest, and is seen by experts as a site of great importance due to the outstanding glacial, periglacial and chalk formations.
We’re delighted to be applying our unique set of skills to College Lake to improve the interpretation and enhance the experience for visitors. New exhibits will include improved geology and farming zones, exciting interactives to engage our younger audience and an introduction to the heritage of College Lake through its agricultural, industrial and conservation years.
We love a challenge and are thrilled to have been chosen to work on this exciting interpretation project and are looking forward to bringing to life the many stories College Lake has to offer.
